Education & Foundation
Matthew Smith, PA-C, began his journey at The University of Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. He continued his education at The University of South Florida, earning a Master’s in Exercise Science, before completing his Physician Assistant Master’s Program at Barry University in Miami.
NFL Sports Medicine
Following his graduation from the University of Alabama sports medicine program, Smith was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers athletics department and served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for two years, working alongside NFL medical professionals to care for elite athletes.
WWE Developmental Division
Smith then became Head of Sports Medicine for Florida Championship Wrestling, the developmental division of WWE. In this role, he built a comprehensive sports medicine program from the ground up and provided care for high-level athletes, including coverage for FCW events and international travel with WWE’s SmackDown and Raw brands.
Orthopaedic Leadership
Smith continued his career at Orthopaedic Medical Group of Tampa Bay, where he played an instrumental role in the group’s expansion across Tampa Bay. He covered surgical procedures, led educational initiatives, organized the Fracture Conference, served on the Education Subcommittee, and became one of only two Physician Assistants appointed to OMGTB’s Board.
National Physician Education
His expertise led to a role with Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon division as a Key Opinion Leader and Physician Education Trainer, where he provided national presentations on wound closure innovations and best practices for improving surgical outcomes.
Regenerative Medicine Leadership
Today, Smith serves as Director of Education and Owner of OrthoCare Concierge, where he pioneers new protocols and training programs in regenerative medicine. He is also an active member of the Regenerative Medicine Orthopaedic Society.
Sports, Mentorship & Community
Outside of his clinical work, Smith has served as Head Coach for the Tampa Bay Titans, Assistant Head Coach in 2020, and Head Coach for Under Armour Flag Football from 2014–2018. He also holds a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu from RMNU and previously served on the Board of the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Johnny Ferlita Fishing Tournament from 2009–2015.

His time with the Bucs cemented his reputation as a leader in sports medicine, working alongside some of the best medical professionals in the league and ensuring that elite athletes received top-tier care.
Smith then took the position as Head of Sports Medicine for Florida Championship Wrestling, the developmental division of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Tasked with developing a comprehensive sports medicine program from the ground up, he was responsible for the rehabilitation and care of multimillion-dollar athletes. Whether providing medical coverage for FCW events or traveling internationally with WWE’s SmackDown and Raw brands, his expertise was critical to keeping the industry’s top talent in peak condition.

Early Life & Education
Born in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Companioni relocated to Florida with his family in 1960 and has called Tampa home ever since. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1970 before earning his undergraduate degree, graduating cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1974.
Medical Training
Dr. Companioni earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1979. He completed both his internship and four-year orthopaedic residency through the University of South Florida and its affiliated hospitals.
Establishing His Practice
In 1984, Dr. Companioni established his private orthopaedic practice in Tampa, beginning a career dedicated to serving patients throughout the Tampa Bay community.
Board Certification & Professional Recognition
Dr. Companioni became board certified in 1986 and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1988. He has maintained continuous board certification through recertifications in 1996, 2006, and 2016.
Academic & Clinical Leadership
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Companioni has served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at the University of South Florida and as Vice Chief of Surgery Subspecialties at University Community Hospital. He has also contributed to the field through orthopedic presentations, publications, and active involvement in professional organizations.
Community Service
Dedicated to giving back to the community, Dr. Companioni volunteers at the USF BRIDGE Clinic, where he provides orthopaedic care to uninsured adults from underserved populations.

Outside of his professional work, Dr. Companioni enjoys sports and fitness activities and values spending time with his wife, Patricia, their daughters Lisa and Lauren, and their four grandchildren.
